What is an electric panel heater?

A panel heater or electric panel radiator is a radiator that utilises electricity rather than gas to heat a room. Utilising a heating method called convection heating an electric panel radiator warms and heats aluminum heating elements within the body of the panel heater. Once these heating elements have reached the correct temperature, they draw air in from the bottom of the electric panel radiator which passes the heating elements. Heat from the heating elements is transferred to the passing air which is then push through the top of the panel heater and into the room.

There are 5 simple steps to how a panel heater works:

  1. Panel heater is turned on and begins to heat the heating elements
  2. Air is drawn into the panel heater and passes along the hot heating elements
  3. The heat from the heating elements begins to transfer to the air passing along causing the air to heat up
  4. The warm air then begins to rise, reaching the whole room
  5. This warm air begins to cool causing it to fall and be drawn back into the panel heater to be heated up and continue the convection heating process

What room is best for an electric panel heater?

Because electric panel heaters use convection heating to heat a room, they are best suited for small rooms like:

  • Bedrooms
  • Guest Rooms
  • Home Offices
  • Conservatories

This is because the hot air from the panel heater rises to the top of the room and as it begins to cool falls to the bottom which is then drawn back through the panel heater to begin the heating process again. A small room is best suited due to requiring less room space to heat up which means a panel heater can effectively heat the room a lot quicker. If you are looking to heat a larger room like a room living or small hall you may need multiple electric panel heaters to keep the room warm, but if this is the case then you would be best suited to looking at fluid-filled electric radiators.
